Essential Tips for Selecting the Perfect Paint Color

Essential Tips for Selecting the Perfect Paint Color

When you are getting ready to plan a painting project, you will want to choose the best color for your room. There are so many choices out there that it can be overwhelming to determine which is the right color. In addition, paint swatches might look different on your walls than they do in the paint store. However, you can start with your favorite colors, and then select the perfect paint color from there.

Find Some Inspiration

You should start by browsing through magazines and catalogs to find some inspiration. Another great option is Pinterest, and you can find a lot of different options. As you look through these ideas, determine which schemes catch your eye. This will help you find colors that you love, and you get to see them on the walls of someone else’s home. You will start to get an idea of how your home will look with one of these color patterns.

Consider Your Furniture and Decor

It is important to know what furniture and decor you plan to have in the room before you choose a paint color. Some colors will work better than others with what you already have. Make sure that you have an idea of the colors of your furnishings and other items before you set out to choose your paint colors

Figure Out Where You Want Peoples Attention to Go

If you want people to notice the walls in your home, then choose a bold color for the walls. This is a great idea if your furniture is mostly neutral colors and you want to add a pop to the room. Some rooms, such as the bathroom, are great if you want to experiment with bold color choices. Generally speaking, you should stick with more neutral colors in the living spaces. There are a lot of different choices, and you can choose neutral tones with undertones of your favorite colors to compliment your furnishings and other items.

Buy Testers

Paint can look different on the walls from how it looks at the paint store. You can get small testers to bring home and see how it will look on your walls. This gives you an opportunity to see how it will look at different times of the day. Don’t be afraid to paint a large strip of paint so that you really get a good idea of how it will look before you paint the entire room. You can also paint the color onto a piece of poster board and put it up against your furniture to see how it looks. You can actually move the poster board around the room to make sure it is what you want before you paint.

Choose the Right Finish

Paint comes in five different finishes, including the following:

  • Gloss
  • Semi-gloss
  • Satin
  • Eggshell
  • Flat or matte

Gloss is the shiniest finish, and flat is the least shiny. There are pros and cons to each one, but for walls, people often choose eggshell in rooms with moderate traffic or satin in rooms with high traffic.
