What Are the Steps to Painting a Front Door?

One of the most affordable, easiest ways to give your home a facelift is by painting your front door. You can improve your curb appeal quickly with this simple project. If you want to paint your front door, follow these steps.

Gather Your Supplies

The first thing that you need to do is gather your supplies. You need the following:

  • Door paint
  • Primer
  • Painter’s tape
  • Angled paint brush
  • Sponge
  • Sandpaper with fine grit
  • Nine-inch paint roller
  • Roller cover with 3/4” nap
  • Paint tray with liners

Once you have your paint supplies, you are ready to get started. Be sure to keep your supplies organized. You can use an outdoor table and cover it with a drop cloth to make sure that you do not spill any paint.

Remove the Door

The best way to paint your front door is to remove it and lay it over two sawhorses if you can. You should remove the door and choose an area that has plenty of ventilation. You should remove the hardware and the hinges and keep them in a safe place. If you have any glass on the window, use the painter’s tape to cover it so that you won’t get any paint on it.

Clean and Sand the Door

Next, you should clean the door. Take your sponge and use some warm water. You can scrub the surface until it is clean. Once it is clean, you can use the sandpaper. You can go over the door lightly to smooth it out. Now you will want to clean it with the sponge once more and wait for the door to dry.

Primer

If you are changing the color of the door, you will want to use a coat of primer. Pour enough in the paint tray to cover the bottom of the pan. You can paint the edges first with the angled brush. Once you paint the edges, fill in the center with the roller. You should paint the front and back of the door as well as the top, bottom, and sides.

Paint the Door

Once you finish with the primer, you should clean the pan, paintbrush, and roller. Then repeat this process using the paint. You will want to paint the door exactly the same way. You may need to do two coats to have the door smooth and even. Be sure to keep your paint strokes even and go over any drips or streaks. Once you finish, you should let the door dry for several hours.

Hang the Door Back up

Once your door is completely clean, you can remove any painter’s tape and put the hardware back on. Now you can hang your freshly painted door back up and your home will have an entirely new look. Make sure that you clean your brush, your roller, and your tray so that you can use them again. If you have leftover paint, make sure that you seal the top.
